Main characteristic:
Extrusion coating is the application of a molten net of synthetic resin to a substrate. It is a general purpose coating technology for the economical application of various plastics (especially polyethylene) to cardboard, corrugated fibreboard, paper, aluminum foil, cellulose, non-woven fabrics, or plastic films. The actual extrusion coating process involves extruding the resin directly from the slit die head at temperatures up to 320°C onto a moving coil that can then pass through a gap consisting of rubber-covered pressure rollers and chrome-plated cooling rollers. The latter cools the molten film back into a solid state and gives the plastic surface the desired finish. The net usually runs much faster than the resin can be extruded from the mold, resulting in a coating thickness proportional to the speed ratio and gap gap. Extrusion lamination is a similar process, except that the extruded hot melt resin acts as the bonding medium for the second piece of material. Co-extrusion is a similar process, but involves two or more extruders connected to a single die head, in which separate extruded melts are gathered together and eventually extruded into multilayers. The extrusion coatings market includes a variety of end-use applications such as liquid packaging, photographic, flexible packaging, factory and industrial packaging, transport packaging, gunny-bag linings, construction, envelopes, medical/sanitary and release substrates.
